About the GSD
An active, versatile companion
The German Shepherd Dog is known for intelligence, versatility and a close working partnership with people. The breed has served in roles including police work, search and rescue and assistance work, as well as being a much-loved family companion.
Life with a German Shepherd
German Shepherds need time, companionship, training and regular opportunities for physical and mental activity. Individual dogs differ, so consider temperament, your household and the support you can provide before choosing a dog.

A working heritage
The breed developed from German herding dogs. Captain Max von Stephanitz played a central role in establishing the breed and the German breed club, the SV, in 1899.
